What Does Kava Feel Like
What is the Typical Kava Experience?
You’ve heard of it and wonder ‘okay, I want to know what to expect from Kava. What does this Pacific Island drink actually feel like?’ It’s often mentioned as a solid alcohol-free alternative and applauded for its signature kava relaxation effects.
And yes, the applause is warranted.
Most Kava users describe its effects as euphoric and head-clearing. While it’s usually compared to alcohol, Kava effects are not intoxicating or disinhibited. And while alcohol can slow reaction time (even with a low dose), impair judgement and impair coordination, Kava is more selective to relaxation and easing nerves. There is a reduced alertness, and while reaction times may be affected, they’re often quite mild (especially with lower doses).
Does Kava Feel Like Alcohol?
Not exactly. Although Kava is mentioned as a solid alcohol alternative, it doesn’t bring about the exact same type of buzz a Long Island Iced Tea would. It has its own unique buzz: a Kava buzz.
It all begins with most people experiencing Kava numb mouth. The tongue begins to tingle, and feel fuzzy. Some report a pins and needles type of sensation. And that would be the kavalactones taking effect.
Kavalactones are the active compounds in Kava root. Some of these little guys interact with nerve signaling in a way that temporarily reduces sensation in the mouth tissues. 👅
Again, Kava feels a little bit like alcohol – but it is more of a cleaner and calmer experience.
Kava vs Alcohol
– MENTALLY –
Alcohol brings about mental fog, Kava brings about a mental clarity.
Alcohol can amplify emotions, Kava can ease you into an emotional steadiness.
😬 Alcohol can lead to impulsiveness and spark recklessness.
😌 Kava can make you feel grounded and mellow.
Many people also describe Kava as having a “gentle” emotional feel.
– PHYSICALLY –
Alcohol is often warming and stimulating, at first. It can eventually lead to sloppiness and a spinning or dizzy feeling at higher doses.
Kava can be quite relaxing on the muscles and body-heavy. Many report feeling physically calm with much less dizziness than alcohol at higher doses.
Can Kava Make You Sleepy?
While it certainly can bring about drowsiness, this comes down to some key factors:
🫚 The Type of Kava: some varieties of Kava are more calming/heavy that give a “heady” relaxation vibes. Other varieties feel more uplifting and social. Kava bars are often designed to serve both, though the uplifting chat it up variety appears more popular amongst kava drinkers.
🤏 How Much You Take: there’s not exactly a ‘sleepy dosage’ we can pinpoint. This varies by person as a result of weight and Kava sensitivity, but if you’re looking for an approximation we can lay it down in 3 dose sizes~
🟠 Light dose (1-2 grams of kavalactones such as a small shell or 1-2 servings of prepared Kava) This amount will lead you into the relaxation zone and mentally clear your mind. There is minimal sedation, and most define this as the “Kava bar conversation zone”
⚪️ Moderate dose (2-4 grams of kavalactones total over a session) People that consume this amount generally report a mix of calm and contentness. The body is also noticeably more relaxed, and the mind has less mental chatter. All and all this is when some people start feeling “ready to chill.”
🟢 Higher dose (~4-6+ grams of kavalactones in a session) People report strong body relaxation, heavy eyelids, and a very much reduced motivation to move. Many users report sedation or sleepiness at this amount. Kava shifts from social mode to “couch mode.”
🧍Your Body Chemistry & Tolerance: some people will feel more mellow and peaceful while others will feel mentally clear but physically relaxed. It comes down to an individual’s unique system.
🥪 Whether You’ve Eaten: Similar to alcohol and fellow alcohol alternatives, Kava tends to hit a little harder on an empty stomach. We recommend eating a bit beforehand, if you’re looking for the Kava experience to last a bit longer before the possibility of sedation kicks in.
Users also stand a chance of getting sleepy faster if they’re completely new to Kava or if it’s already later in the day.
Did the sleepiness hit harder than planned? The onset is usually 30-90 minutes after drinking, peak sleepiness at 1-3 hours after the last Kava serving. The winding down phase would be at about 3-6 hours after. During this phase, most users are still relaxed and mentally quiet, but the sedation does begin to fade.
Plan accordingly!
What About Hangovers?
Many of us have come face to face the next morning to an alcohol-induced hangover that we’ll never forget with throbbing head, aching muscles, nausea, and some alarming dehydration.
Kava, on the other hand, is less severe. Many report a lingering sleepiness when the wake, dry mouth, low motivation, occasional nausea, and mild dehydration. But the aches and pain-ridden areas that come with alcohol are practically non-existent.
“A little down and tired, but not poisoned.”
Another alcohol hangover downside is the spike in anxiety the next day.
Kava usually doesn’t produce that same “hangxiety.” In fact, some people still feel emotionally calm the next morning after a round or two of Kava.
